I’ve always appreciated the satisfaction of learning how to do something on my own, and I gain equal joy from empowering others in the same way.
Hilary Niles has shared her knowledge at conferences such as Investigative Reporters and Editors, NICAR (National Institute on Computer Assisted Reporting), JAWS Camp (Journalism and Women Symposium) and the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual conventions, on topics ranging from freelancing to Freedom of Information to data journalism.
As one of 13 trainers for the Society of Professional Journalists’ former training program in partnership with the Facebook Journalism Project, she traveled to newsrooms and college campuses around the country to share best practices and the latest tools for using Facebook and other social media in service of the profession. Hilary also has coached undergraduate students in reporting and news writing at the NPR affiliate KBIA in Missouri, and trained countless volunteers at Portsmouth Community Radio in New Hampshire.
She offers in-person and virtual training and coaching, such as this multi-day Data + Narrative workshop through Boston University. Whether in-person, in a webinar or via video chat and screen shares, sessions are adapted to the needs, styles and pace of learners.
